Group Founder/Coordinator: Angela Provenzano
I am a second-year student in the Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program at the The Ohio State University. In April of 2020, I received the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship with the intention of starting an online kinship caregiver support group. You can read more about the program here.
My experience with kinship care is a personal journey. From a young age, I watched my grandparents raise my cousin. I saw all of the challenges and redemptive moments that came with it. My cousin lived with my grandparents until my grandmother passed away and he now lives with my parents. I desired to gain more knowledge on the topic of kinship care in order to make more of an impact for this population. I studied educational psychology at Mississippi State University and joined the Grandfamilies research lab, which looked at psychological outcomes of grandparents raising grandchildren. This research led me to publish a paper about the importance of social support for custodial grandparents. Now at OSU, I strive to provide resources and facilitate peer support for kinship caregivers.
